The Washington State Department of Transportation is responsible for protecting and preserving public-use general aviation airports of Washington. It operates a finance and administration division that handles engineering publications, forms and materials management. The department works to preserve more than 7,000 centerline miles of highways and over 3,000 bridges and ramps. The Washington State Department of Transportation administers a planning program that provides technical resources and uses a cooperative approach to work with airports, communities, planning organizations and local decision makers. It conducts various aviation education and outreach programs that are designed to promote the development of the aviation industry. The department also provides drivers and business licenses and vehicle and boat registration services. The department additionally supports the Airport Aid Grant Program, which provides financial assistance to public airports.
