There has been a tremendous amount of progress made in the past several years in regard to the rejuvenation of downtown Abilene. Historic restorations to the Paramount Theatre, The Grace Museum, Compton Building, Cypress Building, Everman Park, T&P Deport, T&P Freight Warehouse and Windsor Hotel contribute to making Abilene a showpiece for the county and region. The Texas & Pacific Railroad Depot, 1101 North First Street, is located several blocks from The Hotel Wooten and is one of Abilene's most outstanding landmarks. Built in 1910, it provided passenger service until 1967. In 1994, it was restored to its 1920's appearance to serve as the home of Abilene's Convention and Visitors Bureau, Cultural Affairs Council, and Visitor Information Center. Train service is targeted to resume in Abilene and this depot is a potential stopping point for service. The Paramount Theatre, attached to the Wooten, is another of the city's most interesting landmarks. Built in 1930, this magnificent movie palace is a monument to a by-gone era in America when movie going was a chief form of entertainment for people of all ages. A month prior to the Paramount's scheduled demolition, members of the Abilene Preservation League secured the deed halting its destruction and started the Paramount Classic Film Series run by a strictly volunteer staff. A generous benefactor, who formed Paramount Theatre of Abilene, Inc, purchased the Theatre in 1986. The new owner financed its restoration that began in 1986 and was completed in 1987. We are proud to make a contribution to the display of Abilene's beautiful history and add to the numerous restorations that make a trip to the Central Business District a must. We aim to make living at the historic Hotel Wooten just as unforgettable.
