As the hometown of George Washington, Alexandria and its surrounding areas is no stranger to history. Washington, D.C., beautiful Mount Vernon, Arlington Cemetery and the National Masonic Temple are all just minutes away. But despite these famous landmarks and all of the legends that have traveled the waters of the Potomac River, Chart House Alexandria is still the sight to see. Hands down, Chart House is the best river view restaurant in the city. Whether dining outside on the patio or indoors, our seafood restaurant gives gorgeous panoramic views of the waterfront and the sparkling city. Before or after their visit, guests have easy access to famous Old Town sites such as Robert E. Lee's boyhood home, George Washington's Townhouse and Market Square, one of the oldest market places in the whole country. But that doesn't keep diners from spending their time at Chart House. Our Sunday brunch ranks among some of the best in Alexandria

Amazing view of the Potomac River and fairly tasty food! The service wasn't the best, but it was decent enough to warrant a return visit here in the near future.

wonderful experience

I was leery about going to this restaurant after reading all the negative reviews, but I must admit, everything was very, very nice. Sunday afternoon, so not very crowded. Seated right away even though we arrived about 20 min late for the reservation. Service was attentive but not over-bearing. Clam chowder was quite hearty and served hot. Bread was warmed and quite tasty. The main course was served in an over sized platter which made the presentation very nice. Salmon, crab cake and grilled shrimp were excellent. I'm not a big fan of the way most places serve their lump crab cake, but this was done with no fillers and just the right amount of seasoning. The house specialty desert was very good. It was a very nice birthday present. Would want to go back on a spring or summer evening because the views are sure to be spectacular.

Go for the view, not the food

This establishment is so attractive; too bad the food does not match the Potomac River view. Service was slow and most of the food overpriced. For example, a small serving of halibut was $38 as I recall on a recent evening. The combination seafood plate for around $30 was a far better value.

Advice is to stop in for a drink and the view and go elsewhere for dinner.

Good food, mediocre service

The food is usually quite good. You can't beat the view from the Chart House in Alexandria - if you want to see the water. But I don't like that I have to wait to be seated when the place is obviously not full. "20-30 minute wait!" seems standard at this place.
