- Psychotherapy: Psychotherapy has also been called the talking cure. The process can be difficult to describe, as it may vary for every client, therapist, and presenting issue. Often, the initial few sessions are dedicated to getting to know each other and to identifying the difficulties that have brought you to therapy. Depending on those difficulties, we may initially turn our attention to problem-focused strategies. These will be strategies aimed at improving your functioning. It is difficult to explore your thought and emotions, when you are living from one emergency to another. As your functioning improves, you will start to feel more safe, secure, and stable. Your capability to face and investigate difficult questions will increase. So will your ability to recognize your strengths, forgive yourself your shortcomings, recognize the resources you possess, and develop the support system that you need. Couples Therapy: Couples therapy/counseling is offered to support individuals in relationships. Often, these individuals may be thinking about separation or simply want increased/improved intimacy, connection, and understanding. The relationship is the main focus when doing this type of work. However, it is not unusual to explore how each person affects the relationship with the goal of increasing self-awareness and change. Psychological Assessment: Psychological assessments is a testing processes that combines various techniques such as norm-referenced tests, interviews, observations, general collateral information, and sometimes even medical examinations. The goal of psychological assessments is to arrive at a theory about an individual and his or her behavior, personality, socio emotional functioning, capabilities, and abilities. Psychological assessments may also be referred to as psychological testing or evaluation. Licensed clinical psychologists are uniquely and specifically trained to complete and interpret psychological test results. Psychological testing can also be performed by a psychology extern, practicum student, or intern under the supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist. The most important part of completing an assessment is integrating all the information into a cohesive picture rather than simply presenting test results. Psychoeducational Assessments: This offers approximations of an individual’s intellectual/cognitive abilities and educational achievement levels. They answer questions concerning learning disabilities, mental retardation, attention problems, academic abilities, cognitive abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. The goal of psychoeducational assessments is to make recommendations for educational planning and accommodations. It is important to note that emotional, behavioral, and medical issues may be addressed in this type of assessment. Thorough integration and analysis of data is crucial in making the most appropriate and relevant educational interventions and recommendations. Psychiatric Services Psychiatry Services: We work closely with the psychiatrists at the Maia Institute, who are Board Certified in General Psychiatry and Neurology and other subspecialties.
