The National Science Foundation is an independent federal agency that promotes the progress of science and advances national health, prosperity, welfare as well as securing the national defense. The director along with a 24-member National Science Board, direct the organization, and all members of the NSB. The directors are appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the United States Senate for a six-year term. The organization was created by congress in 1950.
