The Alpena News is a daily newspaper that provides news and information to residents throughout Northeast Michigan. It has won numerous awards, including awards for its special coverage of Heroin in Northeast Michigan and the demographic change in the region. The newspaper published its first edition on August 1, 1899. It was incorporated in 1909 by James Collins, W.B. Roberson and Thomas Ferguson. In 1926, John Emmett Richards became the owner and it remained in that family until 1988, when it was sold to Ogden Newspapers. Ogden Newspapers is a diversified media corporation that publishes 39 daily newspapers, several magazines and more than 100 weekly newspapers.
