I’ve lived in a Boone residence for over 2 years. I love it. The landlord was super nice about my large dog. She’s a lab and most places put a weight limit on dogs. My neighbors are really nice and pretty quiet.

When I’ve put in maintenance tickets they are usually resolved within 24hrs which is awesome.

We all have assigned parking and an area for guests to park.
The building is kept clean.
We always get noticed beyond 24 hours of entry.

I think the landlords are pretty on it when it comes to things. I’ve even seen the landlord outside working on the landscaping.

They are great for first time renters. I’d recommend them to my friends and family for sure :)

I have rented from the McKel Group for over 5 years. In my opinion, they are the best landlords I have ever had. The apartment I live in is in great shape and the one time I needed something done, it was finished the next day. All of the tenants around me have always been courteous and if there has ever been a dispute, we communicate and work together to solve the problem.

This company is very prompt and professional. I have not moved because of them.

By far the worse place I have ever lived. We rented one of the apartments at 3222 Lincoln way and on a normal week day:

We are awaken at 1am by loud upstairs neighbors who we have called the cops on repeatedly and since the walls are so thin it shakes our apartment.

I then get up at 4:30am to go to work before classes to find huge spiders (not daddy long legs) and eat breakfast that I have to keep in big containers because several mice are living in the kitchen wall.

Not to mention our drains are very old and get clogged fairly often and flood the bathroom.

When addressing my concerns such as the holes on the outside of the building apartment where mice and bugs were crawling into our walls and getting into our food. The landlords shrugged me off and declined getting me an exterminator and did nothing about the holes. I had to get the city of Ames involved in order to get the problem somewhat under control. Still its has been several weeks and we still are catching mice.

In general our experience has been terrifying. I would classify the landlords as rude and definitely taking advantage of college students. I would never recommend renting from them.

I have been horribly frustrated with this rental agency since day 1. My significant other and I moved into an apartment on 209 N. Hyland Ave in Ames, and we were there for a total of one year. During that one year, we experienced

- On day 1 our apartment had not been cleaned, and light bulbs were not replaced before we had moved in.

- After about 6 months, the owner of the building unlocked our door and walked into our apartment unannounced, uninvited, and WITHOUT any 24 hours warning while we were sleeping (we awoke when we heard him in our hallway, RIGHT OUT SIDE OF OUR BEDROOM DOOR).

- One week later, we were billed for $40 in "late fees" for "not paying our rent on time". We have NEVER paid our rent late- they claimed they did not see our check in the drop box, but lo and behold, when the re-checked it they found and and blamed us for it being late. After calling and complaining, they told us it would be taken care of- ONLY FOR THEM TO CHARGE US THE $40 ONCE WE HAD MOVED OUT.

- Around 7 months our sink broke, as well as our neighbors in our bathroom. The maintenance man took ONE WEEK to come to the apartment to fix the sink (which was unusable to us at that time) and then left A HOLE IN OUR BATHROOM WALL CONNECTED TO THE OTHER TENANTS for ONE MONTH. A hole that you could SEE INTO THE OTHER TENANTS BATHROOM. When the maintenance man finally patched the hole in the wall about a month later, it was not painted or resurfaced, but left a mess.

- During the whole year notices were posted to tenants about maintenance outside of the building- however, they were never ONCE carried out within the said time frame. -

As with the outside maintenance, apartment maintenance was also never carried out within said time frame, or completely disregarded the 24 hour notice completely (which is very ILLEGAL.)

- The overpriced apartment itself was horribly aged and molding, and the driveway was thin and steep. In the winter, cars would slide and almost hit other parked vehicles. The parkinglot, by the way, was a gravel lot that only held about 6 cars for 9 two bedroom apartments.

Aside from all of the above, the other tenants were also incredibly loud and threw parties every weekend. One weekend a tenant had a party and a guest of theirs got sick and THREW UP IN THE HALLWAY, which wasn't cleaned until I personally called McKel Group- TWO WEEKS LATER.

Overall, I am left feeling very robbed of my money and horribly mistreated. McKel Group is by far THE WORST people I have ever housed under - and it takes a lot for me to be this angry. HORRIBLE customer service.
