Cook Inlet Housing Authority, founded in 1974, provides affordable housing options to the low-income citizens of Alaska. It promotes economic self-sufficiency for families through homeownership and rental housing options. The agency receives its funding through the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act, which is national legislation designed to meet the critical housing needs of the Alaska Natives and the American Indians. It has partnerships with a variety of organizations, such as Brother Francis Shelter, McKinnell House, the Ernie Turner Center and Homeward Bound, Dena A Coy, the Municipality of Anchorage, Anchorage Neighborhood Housing Services and Cook Inlet Tribal Council. The agency supports a number of local youth programs and operates more than 500 units of rental housing located in Anchorage, Kenai, Seldovia and Ninilchik.
