The Public Works Department handles all issues related to infrastructure maintenance, such as streets, electrical, water and sewer. Additionally, the department handles solid waste, recycling and environmental protection. Its household hazardous waste collection division collects batteries, drain openers, fire extinguisher, fluorescent light bulbs, household cleaners and polishes, furniture strippers, photographic chemicals, paints and lacquers, pesticides, herbicides, poisons, solvents, thinners and mercury thermometers. It accepts glass food and beverage containers, newspapers and magazines and plastics for recycling services. The Public Works Department is governed by the town of Apex, N.C.
