Established in 1899, Mount Rainier National Park is open all year and is visited by more than 2 million visitors each year. It maintains active relations with various Indian tribes located in its vicinity, including Puyallup, Squaxin Island, Muckleshoot, Yakama and Cowlitz. The park maintains an active program of inventory, monitoring and management of archeological resources. It offers several activities, such as scenic drives, bicycling, fishing and boating, hiking and mountain climbing. The park provides special junior ranger programs on summer weekends. It maintains an archive of official park records and manuscript collections. The park offers a range of activities in winter, such as ranger-guided snowshoe walks, paradise snowplay, camping, snowboarding, snowmobiling and skiing. It also conducts various curriculum-based educational, professional development and internship programs. Mount Rainier National Park is located in Ashford, Wash., and is a part of National Park Service, which is a network of more than 400 natural, cultural and recreational sites throughout the United States. It is a bureau within the United States Department of the Interior.
