Ive been a member for years. Always liked it. Likeceveryone says female mamagement is rude. That accounts forcdecline inbetship and the fact that they RENEW your membership withput your aithorization! Poor business practice and refuse to refund the 4omths they deboted my account. The actual gym is decent, albe...

The actual gym is decent, albeit expensive, and they keep taking away more and more space from the main room with all the machines to make random specialty classes. However, I must **WARN** you that as other reviewers have said, the staff are the most arrogant, and deceitful I have come across in the health club industry to date. There are such shady business practices going on here that they actually train the clueless front desk staff NOT to allow you to speak with upper management. I had been in what I thought was a month to month contract for over 2 years, which I was paying $20-$30 per month more for (almost $100 per month!), than a year long contract would have cost. After being a member for more than 2 years with no payment issues whatsoever, a couple unfortunate circumstances happened which cause me to have to move, and I also could no longer afford the hefty monthly charge. I didn't think it would be a big deal to go in and cancel a membership which I believed to be month to month. WRONG. To my dismay I find out that The Rock wants 2 months notice to cancel a membership I was paying much more for believing it was month to month. So essentially, the minute you sign up for a month to month membership, you will be forced to pay at least 3 months before you can cancel. When I explained my extenuating circumstances to one of the staff members, including where I was moving, I was originally told that if I return with a copy of my lease and some other bill in my name at my new address I could cancel after 1 months notice. Unfortunately this was just told to me verbally. When I returned with the 2 said documents, I was then told that I could not cancel my month-to-month (supposed to be no commitment) membership because I wasn't moving more than 30 miles away. Several more phone calls later, and I was finally told I could cancel after November... paying for a full 2 months that I would not set foot in the gym, and the staff knowing full well my extenuating family and moving circumstances. At this point I was still not given anything in writing that my membership would be cancelled at the end of november. To get in writing that my (let me repeat) month-to-month no commitment membership would be cancelled I had to have an all out shouting match with one of the staff members in the middle of the gym in which I threatened to get my cousin who works for Fox News NYC involved, amongst other things. THE GYM MAY LOOK DECENT, AND UNFORTUNATELY IS ONE OF THE FEW IN THE DITMARS AREA, BUT THEY ARE WAY OVER PRICED, AND TRUST ME THEY WILL PUT YOU THROUGH HELL WHEN THE TIME COMES THAT YOU NEED TO CANCEL YOUR MEMBERSHIP. JUST DON'T DO IT TO YOURSELF

Don't just take my word for it either, check out their F rating with The Better Business Bureau. http://www.bbb.org/new-york-city/Business-Reviews/health-clubs/rock-health-fitness-in-astoria-ny-1211
