My name is Sandie. Throughout my life I have battled with the disease of addiction. At the end of my active addiction, I wanted to end it all. I tried, but God had a different plan for me. I was incarcerated for three years in prison. During that time I found God. I prayed. I asked God to one day give me the opportunity.
The opportunity to help women who were like me. Who suffer daily the way I had. I was released from prison and I went home. I was miserable, because my children were in active addiction and there was nothing I could do. I found out after spending ten months at home that I had to go to rehab.
I tried talking to my probation officer to get a sentence modification. It was a no go. Even though I was miserable at home, seeing my children in active addiction and being so close to falling myself I was willing to put up with it. I was willing to put up with it because I was afraid of change. The day came and I had to go.
I had spoken with some people at the palm house and that's where I would be living. I would be there for a year. I was so nervous and was dreading the days that were coming . Time flew by though and something amazing happened. My prayer was coming true.
I grew in the program and was promoted to being a house parent. I was starting my journey in recovery and helping other women. The reward of seeing these girls come in broken and afraid like me, then seeing them change and start putting their lives together again. I’m telling you there is nothing like it. No price can ever be placed on it.
This is all thanks to being here at the Palm house. Since then I have graduated the program. I am now the Assistant Women's Coordinator. Last and most importantly I have my children back and they are no longer in active addiction.
