The Athens Chamber of Commerce provides information on visiting as well as information on living, working, or retiring in this great community. Athens is the recipient of the "shining star award" as a hard working rural community and as a "certified retirement community" by the Texas Department of Agriculture. It prides itself on the small town atmosphere, yet it is close enough to be cities like Tyler (35 miles to the east) and Dallas (75 miles to the northwest). Athens is surrounded by lakes making it a boater's and fisherman's paradise. It is home to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries, which boasts of 300,000 gallons of aquaria along with other exhibits at the fresh water fishing museum. Henderson County Performing Arts Center is located in Athens. Henderson County Fair Complex holds various equestiran events. Trinity Valley Community College offers a wide range of continuing education courses. At the Cain Center, there is an Olympic sized swimming pool, a fitness facility and various meeting facilities.
