Emory University is a private university founded in 1836 and is named after John Emory, a popular bishop of the Georgia Methodist Conference. The university comprises nine academic divisions that include schools of arts and sciences, theology, business, law, medicine, public health and nursing. It enrolls more than 11,000 students and over 2,500 faculty members who represent all regions of the United States and nearly 100 foreign nations. The university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor's, master's and doctor levels. Its unofficial mascot is Dooley, a skeleton dressed in black. The university s sports teams are called the Eagles and they participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III. It has athletic teams for men and women in cross country, swimming, tennis, track and field, basketball, and soccer, as well as golf and baseball for men, and volleyball and softball for women.
