Do's and Dont's

Aaron Parriott Painting, Do's and Dont's for finding the right Painting Contractor.

Painting your home

A fresh coat of paint can add new life to a dingy room and can even brighten up an entire house. In fact, according to some Bakersfield area realtors, a fresh paint job is often the most cost-effective home improvement. The first step in the painting process is selecting the right paint. Next comes selecting a reputable painting contractor.

Selecting a paint

Some thought should go into your paint selection. Exterior painting may require a different finish from interior painting, and a child’s room may be painted differently from a living room or kitchen. Paint color can make a room feel larger, brighter, or more intimate. There are different paint bases, like solvents (oil paint) and water (latex or acrylic paint); there are also different paint finishes with varying amounts of gloss and sheen. We can also paint special faux finishes or effects onto your walls. Consider your options for paint quality—higher-quality paint may give you better results with less work.

Color.

Color scheme is an important and personal choice. Various color schemes create different atmospheres and often say much about the owner. To choose the right color scheme, whenever possible, view color samples at home. Because home lighting is almost always different than paint store lighting, the sample you loved in the store can appear dramatically different at home.

Quality.

Skimping on paint quality by purchasing a less expensive, lower-quality paint should be avoided. Often, cheaper paints require an additional coat to get the same result as more expensive, higher-quality paints. Since the cost of paint is usually much lower than the cost of labor, cheaper paints often cost more in the end. Good quality paints usually cover between 320 and 340 square feet per gallon. When engaging painters, you should ensure that the paint paid for is the same as the paint applied. Some less-reputable painters have charged homeowners for expensive paints and then applied cheaper paints or simply used paint left over from previous jobs.

Painting contractors

Knowledge and experience are key to successful painting. I know which products to use where, drying times, and drying temperatures. Many painters carry either no insurance or inadequate insurance. Painters, like any company working at your home or business, should carry both liability and workers' compensation insurance. Aaron Parriott Painting carries both liability of $1,000,000.00 and workers compensation insurance that will be supplied at your request.

Some painters request large up-front payments to cover the paint purchase. Avoid up-front payments whenever possible. Some painters spend the up-front paint money on something other than paint and then delay starting the job because they have no paint. Lending money to a painter who cannot afford to buy paint is a risky proposition. If you must hire such a painter, accompanying the painter to the store to purchase the paint is a good compromise. You should pay the store directly for the paint and should then take the paint back to your house. Of course, an even better solution is to hire a reputable company in the first place.
