Kern High School District (KHSD) is headquartered in Bakersfield, California and serves the county of Kern located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. The KHSD encompasses about 3, 500 square miles, about 43 percent of the total area of Kern County. Founded in 1893, the KHSD currently includes: A state leader in Career Technical Education (CTE) with 13 School-to-Career Academies, two CTE facilities (Regional Occupational Center and Bakersfield Adult School), two Special Education Career Centers and CTE courses at all comprehensive sites. The largest entertainment provider in Kern County sponsoring each year more than 8, 000 athletic contests, fine arts performances and youth activities. One of Kern's largest employers with more than 3, 604 employees including teachers, administrators and classified personnel. One of the largest transportation providers in Kern County with a fleet of buses that travel more than 2 million miles a year.
