My Grandmother Barbara Hawkins was a founding member of St. Luke's Episcopal Mission and served as organist and choir director until a few months before her death on September 18, 1965. I remember how happy she was when it became St. Luke's Episcopal Church. When I was very small it had folding chairs, and an enormous swamp cooler on either side of the altar. In time pews were acquired and refrigeration replaced the swamp coolers. The Sanctuary has not changed much, but the exterior has underground quite a transformation. I have to compliment the architect who brought it to its present state, because that person did a magnificent job. In 1975 the freeway was not there, nor was Mall View Road. A very long driveway from Mt. Vernon led up to the property. It was a dry and dusty spot, not unusual for Bakersfield at that time.
