An open letter to Hannaford Supermarkets



As a concerned employee I'd like to address the direction of this company. I recently went and worked at a Whole Foods for a year and my impressions were night and day. Unfortunately due to a move I'm now back with Hannafords. I have about 8 years with the company and only make about $9.30 an hour as a grocery supervisor. At Whole Foods starting pay for any employee is $10.00 because it's near impossible to live on anything less, not to mention the 20% discount off everything in the store. While money is nice this is the smallest problem. The total disregard of human individuality is where Hannafords falls shortest. They want as scripted conversations and appearances as possible. You will get spoken to for saying things like "you're welcome" or "no problem" you are supposed to say "thank you" in any situation, even when it makes no sense at all. The slightest amount of stubble, a unique haircut, or color is enough for disciplinary action to be taken. You better fit into Hannafords vapid status quo or you won't last long. In this aspect Whole Foods takes the cake. They actually promote individuality and fun. They want you to speak how you actually speak in real life, dress how you actually dress, be an actual unique person. Not only does this make work more enjoyable for employees, the customers actually respond to being treated like a real person. In 8 years at Hannfords I don't know a single customers name, 1 year at Whole Foods and I knew every regular by name, the car they drive, shopping preferences, you name it. By acting like an original person customers were drawn into conversations and the Whole Foods family. Working for Whole foods you feel like a community even a family. They create events like park clean ups and animal shelter volunteering. I don't even know the names of anyone outside my department at Hannafords. As corporate and management care less about the employees we care less about our jobs and quality of work. I believe if Hannaford Supermarkets would make a few changes they could step up as a great company to work for. If they don't Bangor and other small cities will continue to grow and more companies like Whole Foods who actually respect their employees will come to town and Hannafords will lose its best workers. I've seen more people quit this year than in my 8 years of work, that should tell you something.
