After having lived at Teal Run...

After having lived at Teal Run for 10 years, my 80-year-old mother needed to move to a senior living facility. My mother asked me to clean her apartment at Teal Run after she moved out. As I had not lived in an apartment for three decades, I was unsure as to what would be expected. (For example, should the carpet be shampooed?)

I contacted the office at Teal Run for information, and was told that my mother had received a list of cleaning tasks with her move-out package, and Teal Run would not provide a separate list for me. A few days later I called again and spoke with a different employee. The employee said there was no list of tasks – only a list of charges for problems/tasks undone. She said the apartment must be in “move-in condition” and that Teal Run would “sanitize” the apartment before the next renter moved in. I tried repeatedly to get her to define what she meant by “sanitize” (I didn’t want to bother with cleaning that Teal Run was planning to do) and she was either unwilling or unable to do so. I asked if I could see the list of tasks if I stopped by the office during normal business hours. She listed off about three tasks, but adamantly refused to let me see the list in person.

My mother was unable to find the list that was supposedly provided to her, and she also called Teal Run. The employee that took the call said she couldn’t help.

While at Teal Run, I stopped by in the office. The employees were very rude – would only tell me I didn’t need a list, because “clean is clean.” After informing them of discrepancies in what had been said in response to my earlier phone calls, one of the employees retrieved a single 8.5 x 11 piece of paper that comprised the list and practically flung it at me.

As expected, I did learn more from the list that enabled me to focus on the more important aspects. For example, I did not need to spackle the small holes left from hanging pictures, and the apartment would be painted.

If Teal Run is so utterly uncooperative in providing a single sheet of paper for an elderly woman after 10 years of renting, I can’t imagine what the level of cooperation would be for other situations.

By the way – one of the neighbors came to the apartment to complain about the noise of my cleaning activities, and told me the wall are “paper thin.”
