Provided by YP.comFamily gathered @ the Tipsword Cemetery S of Beecher City to dedicate a new tombstone for Griffin & Ruth Tipsword in 2013.
Returning to the land where he lived & hunted wild life for food, clothing, warm bedding for his family; the land to the W N of the cemetery is still a hunter's paradise. Griffin & sons were hunters. The crops, by the women.
Griffin, remembered as the first white man to settle in Effingham Co. moved his family to the timber land just S of Beecher City/ 1815.
The end of his journey thro the wilderness of North Carolina/West Virginia/Virginia, he & his family always lived in the wilderness.
As other settlers moved W, Tipsword would be the "tip of the sword" leading the way westward. He was 60 when he finally settled S of Beecher City.
Like many other men of his time, he served under General George Washington during the Revolutionary War.
He was honored by representatives of the American Revolutionary War Soldiers & the Effingham American Legion Post 120 Color Guard.

Provided by YP.comThe first white man to settle in Effingham County was a Tipsword,
Griffin Tipsword, with Moccasin as the oldest settlement. The Tipsword cemetary is the original in the county. Beecher City & surrounding villages have many, many Tipsword descendents. A goodly number served in the military & engaged in wars throughout our history. It was even rumored that Griffin served in the Revolutionary War. This photo shows some but not all of the Tipswords who served. Garry Tipsword, Korea and son, Tawn Tipsword who recently retired from an illustrious career are shown here pointing to their names. Daughter, Tana Compton also served in the Army. Garry & Tawn were Navy men. All of Garry's 5 brothers served, some in WWII. We thank them for their dedication to our country and all from Beecher City who were in the military and are included in this lovely Memorial Park.
