Founded in 1890, United Mine Workers of America is an association formed by the merger of Knights of Labor Trade Assembly 135 and the National Progressive Union of Miners and Mine Laborers. The company established a series of hospitals in the coalfields to provide health care to coal miners and their families. Located in Hueytown, Ala., it represents food service employees, as well as service and maintenance workers in hospitals and nursing homes. The company also represents public safety officers, corrections officers, office workers, waste management employees, maintenance workers and communities throughout the United States.
