Located in Bethesda, Md., National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also known as NIAID, conducts and supports basic and applied research to understand, treat and prevent infectious, immunologic and allergic diseases. It has been operational for more than 50 years and is a component of the National Institutes of Health. It provides treatment for various infectious diseases, such as AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, influenza, tuberculosis and malaria. NIAID also supports research on basic immunology, transplantation and immune system-related disorders, including autoimmune diseases, asthma and allergies. The institute s vaccines research programs develop and improve vaccines for a variety of human diseases, including rabies, meningitis, whooping cough, chickenpox and pneumonia. It prints various publications, including pamphlets, information sheets and reports for the general public on various health topics and research activities. The institute also offers information on clinical studies of experimental treatments and vaccines conducted by NIAID.
