A conviction of a criminal code can have serious long term consequences. It would be poor advice to ever recommend someone represent them self in a felony matter. Further, a person should not represent them self in a misdemeanor trial without first consulting with an attorney to assure the ramifications of a conviction are understood. The adage, "the lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client," is applicable to the non-lawyer who represents himself as well. If you are facing a felony, or even a misdemeanor, and you are thinking about representing yourself... at least get an opinion as to whether or not that is wise. Depending on the situation, you may be making a decision you will later regret. Family law encompasses a variety of practice areas such as adoption, divorce and child custody. Some have wondered if our court system is the best place for two people, who once loved each other, to fight in an adversarial process. Some strides have been made to move divorce into a more collaborative process, like mediation, but the judicial branch is still heavily involved in the divorce and custody arena. If you have children, you should get a will for the primary purpose of establishing who will become the guardian of your children at your death. If you do not have any living heirs, you definitely want a will. If you have specific items of property that you want to go to specific people, you need a will.
