In 1871, the first Boulder Fire Department consisted of city leaders and "every person" available to protect the population of 343 and their 77 dwellings. The department s staff now exceeds 100 firefighters in seven stations with a budget of approximately $11 million. The department provides fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical care, fire prevention services and public education to the 100,000-plus citizens who live within a 24-square-mile radius of Boulder, Colo. Boulder s fire fighters do more than just put out fires. They are prepared to deal with flooding, vehicle extrications, rescues, carbon monoxide or tree branches on power lines.
