Always on time and they do great work

We called Nate's Plumbing because we live near them and wanted to support local, community businesses. We had some basic plumbing that needed to be done: two sinks and faucets installed, a toilet, etc. I called Nate's and asked for a price for these pretty standard things. The man I spoke with refused to give me any idea of a price over the phone. So, at that time, I asked him to come out and give me a bid. He said that to save gas, he didn't give bids, he would just come out and give us a price (and get our approval of the fee) before beginning the work. A contractor was sent out the next morning and gave us a ridiculous quote of $1200 (approx. 2-3 hours of work -- all materials were provided. We said that we weren't willing to pay that amount and said we didn't want the work done. At that point, FOR THE FIRST TIME, the plumber said that there was a $100 service charge for him coming out there. We would have never agreed to PAY for a bid -- we had several plumbers that agreed to give us a bid for free. We only had gotten their bid first because they came out the day after we called. By the way, their prices are insane.... we ended up getting the work done for $275 by a different licensed plumber. We were shocked to get a bill from Nate's plumbing. Immediately after receiving it, we called their office to describe the problem. The owner was not in when we called so we left a message that we were NOT going to pay a fee that we didn't know about first and that the owner should call us. We didn't hear anything until we just got a threatening letter from their attorney advising us that we had a debt with them.
