After weeks of struggling with the importation of a car from Canada into the USA, I found Can-Am Auto Importers on the NHSTA list of approved Registered Importers. My initial inquiries were promptly answered. In fact so promptly, that the response almost seemed to have this "it's no big deal, we do this all the time" sense to it. As it turns out, for them, it wasn't a big deal, and they apparently do it all the time.

I checked with other Registered Importers here in California as well as in British Columbia and Washington. I got estimates ranging from $300 (turns out they weren't even a Registered Importer) to $1200 (they were going to put the car on a truck for 20 mile trip to the border). Can-Am's fee was the lowest of the Registered Importers that I contacted. I initially worried that their location in New York State would be an issue. It wasn't.

Scott Boggs of Can-Am provided me with a list of required documents and photos along with a few forms to fill in. After gathering all the required elements, I emailed them to Scott. About a week before the date I was going to bring the car across from Canada, Scott emailed me all the certifications and documents required by Customs and Border Protection.

Crossing the border was easy. I simply showed up at the commercial crossing in Blaine, WA with the car, paid $10.25 to CBP for a "Truck Fee" and I was on my way in 10 minutes. It couldn't have been any easier. By the time I got the car home to San Diego, the new DOT sticker from Can-Am arrived.

If I ever have a need to import a car from Canada again, I would use Can-Am without hesitation.
