The Alamance-Burlington School System is a countywide, comprehensive school district, created in 1996 through a merger of the former Alamance County and Burlington City public school systems. The school district operates more than 30 high schools, middle schools, elementary schools and alternative schools. Some of the schools in the system include Alexander Wilson Elementary School, Eastern Alamance High School, Graham Middle School, Haw River Elementary School, Pleasant Grove Elementary School, Southern Alamance High School and Woodlawn Middle School. The institute actively participates in the federal program, Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative that aims to prevent violence and substance abuse among youth, schools and communities. The school district also offers various options for students who want to leave the school before they graduate. The Alamance-Burlington School System has headquarters in Burlington, N.C.
