Michigan House Cafe & Brewpub is located in the heart of Historic Downtown Calumet across the street from the Vertin Building - the new home of Miskwabic Ed Gray Studio, Abbey Art Glass Studio, and an ever growing list of other artists. The Sixth and Oak intersection is also conveniently located two blocks from snowmobile trails and Swedetown ski trails, and 11 miles from Mt. Bohemia. The street level offers a full service restaurant and a vintage pub. Overnight lodging is available on the second floor (once the Hotel Michigan) with two suites that have been rehabilitated in historic fashion. Red Jacket Brewing Company, Michigan's newest Brewpub, is beginning operation on the ground floor as well - following the historic Bosch Brewing tradition.

consistently....inconsistent

we had a party of five there on a weekday night, i think last tuesday. the pub side was full except for the 4-top table we got. the dining room side had a private party so it was full and noisy too.

although the waitstaff was standing near the wait station, apparently they couldn't see that a new party had sat down. one waitress finally brought silverware and plates and stated that the waiter would be right over. we could see him at the wait station but he was engaged in conversation with another worker and did not come over for 10 minutes.

this is the same service that we have come to expect at the michigan house. the best way to describe it is that they don't really seem to care about the patrons.

food has become expensive. for example, the steak is nearly $25, but fully cooked i bet the weight is only 8 ounces.

the wraps are consistently good. i love their homemade dressing, kinda like cucumber ranch, that is always good.

burgers are nearly $9! although big and with a ton of fries, is that for real?

our table had the steak, 2 burgers, ribs, and salmon. the salmon came out cold & dry and our friend did not eat more than 2 bites (no fishy bag either to take it home, it was so bad). the bill with tip was $125; each of us had 2 drinks, either beer or wine.

To summarize, there is something maddening at the way the service and inconsistent food takes away from what could be a cool experience.

certainly the bulding and the decor are way cool.

i'll be going back cause the alternatives are few. maybe just have drinks and cheese fries so i can get away for under ten bucks.

Michigan House

The restaurant is located in an old hotel from the booming mining days. Much of the interior appears to be original and it is very charming. The service was competent and low key. The menu has something for everyone and the prices are reasonable. My companion had the Harvest Salad with the addition of 5 ounces of Tenderloin for an additional dollar. The salad was loaded with walnuts and dried cranberries, and the Tenderloin was cooked to his liking and was fork tender. I had salmon - a huge portion, perfectly cooked. The prices are very reasonable and the portions large. If we're ever in Calumet again, we'll definitely go back.
