The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection provides services for more than 31 million acres of California's privately owned wildlands. The department's firefighters, fire engines and aircraft respond to an average of more than 5,600 wildland fires each year. It assisted in various disasters, including the Northern and Central California floods of 1997, 1998 and 2006; the 1991 Cantara train derailment and toxic spill; 1994 Northridge earthquake; and the 2003 Southern California Fire Siege. The department offers various services, including, investigating arson fires, licensing and inspecting fire protection systems, regulating the use of chemical flame retardants and evaluating building materials against fire safety standards. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has been operational for more than 100 years and is located in Camino, Calif.
