The American Legion, founded in 1919, is one of the largest nonprofit community service organizations in the world. It has more than 3 million members and provides support services to military personnel, veterans and their families. The organization s member benefits and services include career assistance, financial guidance, travel discounts and medical aid. The American Legion sponsors American Legion Baseball, Junior Shooting Sports, the National Oratorical Contest and scouting programs. The organization also publishes political articles, magazines and research papers. Its program, American Legion Riders, raises funds for hospitals, veteran relief associations, and centers for women and children. The American Legion Riders also teaches motorcycle riding, as well as encourages driver s safety in communities and schools in cooperation with other national motorcycling organizations. In addition, The American Legion undertakes fundraising activities and participates in various commemorative, social and charity events. It is headquartered in Indianapolis and maintains a location in Camp Douglas, Wis.
