In July 1952 Carlsbad, Calif., became an incorporated city and hired its first chief of police. The chief was the only member of the department and had a desk at the State Parks and Recreations Department. The Carlsbad Police Department has grown to a total of nearly 150 personnel that includes more than 100 sworn officers and less than 40 non-sworn employees. The department provides a number of services to the residents of the city, such as traffic safety and enforcement, street and bicycle patrol, gang suppression, community-oriented policing, a variety of crime prevention services, tactical team, off-road law enforcement, family services, juvenile services, domestic violence investigation and prevention and child abuse investigation. The Carlsbad Police Department is located in Carlsbad.
