San Juan Unified School District has its office located in Carmichael, Calif., and serves the northeast area of Sacramento County, including schools located in Sacramento, Arcade, Arden, Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, portions of Folsom, Gold River and Orangevale. It operates under a superintendent and an elected school education board and administers more than 80 schools, comprising of an elementary, middle, alternative and high school. The schools offer classes from grades kindergarten through 12 and their total enrollment is more than 45,000 students. Its courses follow the requirements of the state education board and core subjects include English language arts, science, computer studies, social science and mathematics. San Juan Unified School District encourages its schools to offer a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, such as football, softball, basketball and volleyball.
