Paul Reiber I work at the intersections of artistic and spiritual traditions. My sculptures pose questions of the Spirit and of the viewer's moral insight into the human experience. I understand beauty and grace to be prayer and narrative to be the telling of sacred truth. Using chisel and mallet I focus on the human figure as the central sculptural concern. The direct act of removing material and exploring the emerging image is essential to my art. I start with an initial image, often more emotional than visual. I draw to help let the image develop and begin looking for an appropriate block of wood. The real work, the joy and learning for me comes in the process of going into the block and working with it to allow the image to emerge. The final image is a conversation between myself, my inner vision and the personality of the material. Paul teaches carving at a variety of locations including one-on-one classes in his studio.
