He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois. Dr. Hettinger is board certified in internal medicine. His primary patient-care interests include hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, COPD, and peptic ulcer disease. Dr. Hettinger's professional memberships include the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Hettinger was a Notre Dame Scholar from 1995-1999.; Dr. Hettinger also received the Illinois General Assembly Scholarship for academic achievement.; He chose to become a physician because of the great privilege of helping people in their time of need, as well as a strong interest in the science of modern medicine.
