Established in 1818, the Chambersburg Police department is a full-service law enforcement agency that maintains law and order and protects residents lives and their property. It operates patrol, K-9, traffic and records divisions. The department has a criminal investigation division that undertakes cases related to homicide, murder, sexual assault, drug abuse and property crime. The Chambersburg Police department s accident reconstruction team investigates accidents and determines factors and causes, such as speed during the crash, seat belt usage and faulty vehicle equipment. It has a special emergency team that handles hostage crisis, barricaded gunman and high-risk warrant situations. The department also employs a school resource officer. The Chambersburg Police department supports the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program, which focuses on the prevention of illegal usage of drugs, gang activities and violent behavior.
