Founded in 1978, the Department of Social Medicine at University of North Carolina is an academic unit that incorporates the interest of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in community medicine and health care delivery systems. The department informs the work and thought of physicians on the social conditions and characteristics of patients and social responsibilities of the medical professional. The Department of Social Medicine at University of North Carolina conducts a variety of educational, research and service activities in several venues in interdisciplinary collaboration throughout the Chapel Hill campus. The department has active teaching and research interests in cultural anthropology and health; health economics; history of medicine and public health; literature and medicine; medical care organization; and public policy in health and medical care. The Department of Social Medicine at University of North Carolina carries out research in collaboration with the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research and the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. It is located in Chapel Hill, N.C.
