Founded in 1727, Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana maintains a more than 200 acres of land. It operates police, fire, health and museum departments. The organization has a total membership of over 900 people. Its master plan provides for zoning and multiuse land planning. The organization also assists tribes through professional planning firms to ensure the development for retail, commercial, residential and recreational uses. It additionally collaborates with the Department of Housing and Urban Development to offer housing construction and finance programs. Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana features a tribal school that offers education opportunities to students in kindergarten through grade five.
