OLD growth cypress grew for hundreds and even thousands of years of AGE. DUE to the WET conditions the cypress thrived in it's NOT hard to SEE WHY it was considered the natural pressure treat of the DAY. Even by todays standards OLD growth cypress is still superior to modern pressure treated lumber. These beautiful heartwoods have rested mostly undisturbed for decades and centuries in an anoxic environment. Whether these logs came to their resting place by the hands MAN or the wrath of nature. They are the last of their kind. Only a FEW thousand acres of OLD growth cypress remain today of what was once a great expanse of virgin OLD growth bottom land forest. The largest of Today's OLD growth bottom land swamps left is the CONGAREE national park about 100 miles west of charleston. South carolina. Trees grown today are cultivated for production. Which means they grow tall and fast. The average life span for a south yellow pine today is between 20 30 years. AS a consequence. They mostly consist of sapwood with little to NO heartwood. Today. Heartwood is used AS a premier wood for various projects the wood is often seen in hardwood floors. Paneling. Furniture. And beams. Heartwood is TOP notch because of its inherent beauty and unique appeal. NOT to mention, a great center piece to ANY conversation.
