Provided by YPmobileThis review reflects my experience with Mark Buchanan, a doctor employed at Lowcountry Urology located at 1470 Tobias Gadson, Suite 201 in West Ashley.
I gave this business a low rating due to the unprofessional and unwarranted behavior exhibited by Mark Buchanan during a phone conversation.
Some background: I had seen Mark Buchanan twice for a painful condition I had been experiencing in my urinary tract/bladder area. Mr. Buchanan had run tests and cultures to try to determine the problem with no real success. He offered a few theories but could not exactly pinpoint what was wrong. We had discussed a more invasive procedure that might provide a better diagnosis. I was going to allow him to perform this procedure but I first wanted to take some time to see if I could figure out what was triggering the pain I was experiencing. The pain was off and on, but recurring. So a month went by since my last visit with Mr. Buchanan and in that month's time I believe I pinpointed the trigger for my pain. I was feeling relieved and even excited about this determination because now Mr. Buchanan could better determine the best steps for treatment.
The incident: I called Lowcountry Urology with the intention of 1.) speaking with Mark Buchanan to tell him the pain trigger & see if the next best step would be to schedule a particular test or culture or even refer me to a different doctor.
So, I called Lowcountry Urology and asked to speak with Mr. Buchanan or his assistant. I also asked for a prescription of some samples the doctor had given me in the past. The staff member said someone would call me back. Fifteen minutes later I received a phone call from Mr. Buchanan. I excitedly thanked him for calling me back and asked him how he was doing. He replied coldly with "I'm busy." He then began to rant that he "gets paid" to tell people what he thinks and that he is not going to sit on the phone with me to discuss anything. His attitude was cold, condescending and downright rude & disrespectful. He then went on to inform me that I was "difficult" with him and the front desk staff. I was shocked. I asked him to explain and he would not. ** I would like to note , that per their automated phone line, phone conversations are supposedly recorded. Therefore, upper management can listen to all conversations between myself and front desk staff -and- myself and Mark Buchanan. I can assure you I was never rude, or disrespectful to anyone. If being "difficult" means I asked them to do their job then I guess maybe I was difficult.
I understand every doctor/patient relationship is different. My gynecologist always tells me to call her with questions/concerns and I have done so many times in the past. Here's what Mark Buchanan could have said, "I would love to discuss this and any future concerns you have in person so I can better treat you." Instead, he pretty much said unless I was giving him money, he had no time for me.
Your relationship with any doctor is a personal one. Usually, it's discussing sensitive issues and you can often feel vulnerable when you don't know what is going on with you. It is SO important to TRUST your doctor. It's equally important to have a good rapport with your doctor and feel they respect you & want the best for you. I feel like Mark Buchanan's FIRST priority is money. He let me know that himself. How can I believe he is determining the best treatment path for my health when I would be questioning whether he is choosing treatments/surgeries/ETC. that will simply make him more money off of me? That is how this experience has made me feel, which is why I will not patronize this business anymore. There are way too many other urologists out there, and I encourage you to avoid this office located at 1470 Tobias Gadson, Suite 201 in West Ashley.
