Healthcare was not my first choice for a career. My plan was to become a hotel manager at some lovely beachside resort. When my father was simultaneously diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition and diabetes, my priority became taking care of him. I became the healer in the family. \n I attended heart health classes so I could learn how to help my dad during recovery after bypass surgery. I helped my mom find the healthy meals he needed to boost his nutrition. I prepared the insulin injections when Dad could no longer see the fine lines on the syringes. \n Those moments inspired me to become a registered dietitian and go on to become certified as a diabetes care and education specialist. My experiences with my family helped me to become a better dietitian because I understand firsthand the challenges diabetes presents to patients and their families. \n I've worked at Novant Health since 2006 because I really do love my job. I enjoy helping my patients find solutions to improve their health and their quality of life. \n Outside the clinic, my world revolves around my family, which includes my husband, a daughter and three dog children who make us laugh every day. In the spring, I enjoy planting a colorful garden. Getting my hands dirty by pulling weeds and tilling up fresh soil is how I relieve stress.
