Founded in 1993, Smithfield Elementary School offers classes from grades kindergarten through five and has an enrollment of more than 900 students. Its facility consists of a media center, offices, visitor areas and technology-equipped classrooms. Its special curriculum classes include talent development, English as a second language, art, music, physical education, Spanish language instruction, accelerated reader program and character education. The school offers supplies, such as storage bags, paper plates, cups, napkins, tissues, antibacterial soaps, band-aids, crayons, erasers and pencils. The school s media center is automated with more than 15 computers, printers, CD players, video cameras, laser disc players, and math and science manipulatives. Located in Charlotte, N.C., Smithfield Elementary School has a parent-teacher group that hosts annual events. Its group volunteers also serve as lunch buddies, mentors and tutors.
