Provided by YP.comI am a student at UVA; I guess you would call me a "minority" (hate that word), but anyways, I really enjoy this school and have a lot of respect for the professors and staff. The racial situation is not the fault of the school at all--the people to blame are the black/white/asian/Hispanic students who continue to choose to uphold the racial divisions. Personally, I have embraced the diversity at this school; it is truly a great place to meet so many different and interesting types of people from all around the world--I wold have never gotten this opportunity anywhere else. Sure, there are many professors and staff who are overly rude and unhelpful, but they are few and far between and you will encounter that everywhere. I do not consider them being racist against me as a black student. The school is very competitive, and that can work for or against you, depending on the type of person you are. I came to this school to study medicine, but found this area way too difficult and cut-throat-ly competitive at this school for me (explanation for my 4 star rating). I switched to the Curry School of Education to study Communications Disorders and absolutely LOOOOOVVE the Dept.!! Everyone in this Dept. is sooo sweet, encouraging, helpful, and humble. It's absolutely incredible, and I cannot wait to continue my studies there. But going back to wait I said earlier, this school does all it can to create programs, rallies, etc to raise awareness about racial harmony. I know personally that the African American Office is an amazing resource for the new black students coming into the school. I have not experienced any racial hostility at this school, and I try to surround myself with as many different people from as many different backgrounds as possible (racial, cultural, socioeconomic, nation of origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, etc.) Until most of the other students realize the need to do this, the school will always be de facto segregated, regardless of how hard the school tries.
