I was working from home one day in Cherry Hill, and decided I needed a hair cut. So rather than going to the City (Philadelphia), I decided to find a new location on Google. I have always been a big fan of Bumble and Bumble (#bumbleandbumble), sold at many of the better salons, and quickly found Head Candy, less than a mile from my home. In a non-descript, strip mall, located on Route 70, the salon is not much to look at, nestled between a nail salon and a Chinese restaurant and the space is very reminiscent of the defunct greasy spoon restaurant that formerly occupied the premises. My first visit was seemingly uneventful. I was assigned purportedly one of their more experienced stylists (Jamie Meltzer Tate) and following a stimulating and unsolicited discussion of the elegance underlying a unified theory of relativity, it happened that her kids attended my karate school. As I said, my first trip was uneventful, and once again, as a result of convenience, approximately one month later, I decided to return.
Of course when you call them to make an appointment, no one bothers to answer the phone. I suspected they were closed. But after several attempts, I was able to schedule an appointment for later that day, a mens haircut and touch-up (exactly as they had done the first time) and once I gave them them my name, they had all my information from my prior visit, including my mobile number and e-mail, and confirmed the appointment.
I was promptly on time, but did not mind waiting. Half way through my haircut, Ms. Stylist-Jamie seemed to be taken back by the suggestion that I again wanted a touch-up. With another appointment some 45 minutes away, she simply did not have time for that. “Marcy” was having highlights at 5:30, and I would just have to come back.
Ms. Jamie’s solution, give me a half of haircut. Patiently trim the sides, but anticipating Marcy’s imminent arrival (and sufficient time to kabitz with Marcy), left an uncut bowl on the top of my head, only then pawn me off to the shampoo girl to remove the hair dye in haste spewed all over my neck and face.
I did not mind the ethnic slur (“Vinny?”. . .“You look like a Vinny”). But I did mind when they ripped me off. Apparently discerning my lack of enthusiasm for the process, they decided to charge me $90 for a men’s hair cut and touch up. The internet says that hair-cut range from $20-$35, understandably based upon the experience of the stylists. Men’s touch-ups are $20, and even a full color for perhaps a woman with long hair is $50. However, sensing of course that I would not be back, they gouged me for $90.
Needless to say, my review: the place is a dump, the staff appears to be unwashed. Their stylist Jamie Tate is rude, incompetent, and a racist, without compunction, (do not forget Marcy’s highlights) and most of all, the place is a rip-off. Bumble and Bumble should not allow them to sell product.
