The Old Bait And Switch

We contacted this company to repair a small leak in a solder joint from a previous repair job. The owner of the company came out that night to look at the job. He told us exactly what he had to do to repair the leak. When asked about the cost, the owner said it would be around $200-300 dollars depending on what he found once he remove a small portion of the wall, which sounded very reasonable to us. At this point, we were all in agreement on the job and the estimated price. A service technician came the next day and did the job exactly as the owner had described it. He was there just under an hour and one half. The problem cam e when it was time for him to give us the bill. After telling us that he did not set any rates, he told us the bill for this small repair job was $475.00 instead of what the owner had originally said the day before. When it was all said and done, we had one copper elbow ($.53 at your local plumbing supply store), one compression coupling ($2.63 at the same store), and 6 inches of copper tubing ($1.69 per foot at this same store) for a resounding $475.00. Yes, we felt like we were baited with the verbal estimate and got the old switch-a-roo once the job was done.

Caused more problems initially

Although this company responded promptly to replace a water heater in the attic, they caused more problems initially before fixing. I do not know where their pricing is with other plumbers but it was over $1500 for the job. While draining the old water heater, water leaked all over the ceiling and upper hallway. One of the plumbers also fell through the upper drywall leaving a large hole in the ceiling. It took three days to dry out and fix. They also said they would return for the old water heater, and never came back to get it. A scrapper happened by and took it off our hands. What was supposed to be a straightforward job turned into hassle.
