I became a nurse because I've always cared a lot about people and wanted to make a positive difference in their lives. As a hospital RN, I saw how profoundly hospitalization impacted patients and families. It made me think about how to prevent hospitalization in the first place. I quickly realized that was primary care and preventive medicine. I applied to grad school the day after realizing that. I've worked with patients age two and up. In this new clinic, I'll see adults 18 and up. The elder generation is my favorite to work with. All through high school, every Sunday, my grandpa and I would get breakfast, and my values come from the stories and wisdom he shared with me. I want to help elders maintain independence as long as possible. The most important skill a primary care provider needs is active listening. Listening to the patient helps identify not only their goals but potential obstacles. Then we can work together to find the best care plan for that patient.
