Argonne Credit Union, located in Lemont, Ill., is a nonprofit cooperative, offering members a full array of electronic financial services.Established in 1949, in addition to Argonne National Laboratory, its membership has expanded to include the employees of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia,Ill., Superconducting Super Collider in Dallas, and other smaller groups engaged in energy research and development. It has more than 12,000 members and is member-owned and controlled, through a board of directors elected by the membership. It encourages members to save money by paying higher dividends on savings and by offering loans to members at lower interest rates. It offers innovations that include self-insured credit life coverage for borrowers, and the development of one of the first line-of-credit loans for a credit union in Illinois. Argonne Credit Union also offers student loans, home equity loans, and first mortgages.
