The Chicago Police Department consists of a number of bureaus that function in different ways. Administrative Services is responsible for coordinating and directing department activities relating to budget and fiscal control; personnel administration; research, analysis and data collection; grants administration; information services; records and facilities management and statistical crime analysis. Crime Strategy and Accountability is responsible for assessing crime strategies implemented by the department. Investigative Services is responsible for the follow-up investigation of crime and the apprehension of offenders. Patrol is responsible for general field operations. Strategic Deployment is responsible for maintaining ready forces of personnel capable of responding to emergency situations, special events and mission-directed patrols; conducting tactical analytic activities supporting effective deployment of field units; maintaining and deploying certain specialized vehicles; analyzing antiterrorism intelligence; coordinating the department's overall antiterrorism planning and preparation; and providing dignitary protection.
