Chicago Urban League

Established in 1916, Chicago Urban League works to help rural African-American citizens adjust to urban living who migrate from the South. It supports and advocates for the educational and social progress of African-American people through economic empowerment. The league supports various policies and programs that ensure equal participation of African-American in the economic and social mainstream. Chicago Urban League was one of the first affiliates of the National Urban League. It maintains a women s division that raises funds to help implement equal opportunity programs in the areas of housing, employment, education, health and social service. The league also operates an entrepreneurship center that was founded in partnership with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Chicago Urban League additionally administers human capital development programs that provide job retention skills, career advancement counseling, and information and referral services. Its Male Involvement Program provides support services to noncustodial, custodial and other male father figures between the ages of 18 and 40 to help them reconnect with their families and improve parenting skills. The league utilizes nextMEDIA, which is a strategy that is adopted to give a voice to African-American population in Chicago and listen to the concerns of people and showcase successes through print, broadcast and online media. Chicago Urban League issues a quarterly newsletter, as well as manages a research library that features materials related to major studies, white papers and updated polling data.
