Established in 1949, the U.S. General Services Administration is responsible for streamlining the administrative work of the federal government. The agency provides asset management, acquisition and business services to other government entities. It has a work force of more than 11,000 employees and manages over $50 billion worth of federal assets. The U.S. General Services Administration operates through federal acquisition service, public building service, performance improvement, and citizen services and communications offices. The agency also provides equipment, supplies, and information technology and telecommunication services to the federal government. The U.S. General Services Administration additionally manages nearly 8,500 federally owned and leased buildings, as well as preserves approximately 400 historic properties.
