"We make our own," says it all for this Chico institution! Begun in 1938 when Leonard C. Shubert left Montana, at age 54, to find a location in California for an ice cream shop. His nephew, Charles Pulliam, Sr., joined him three years later and then bought the business from Shubert's widow in 1951. Not only is Shubert's Ice Cream & Candy in the same building in downtown Chico, but it also uses one of Leonard Shubert's original 5-gallon ice cream-making machines. And the business is still in the same family, currently with three generations of Pulliams making ice cream, rolling out candies and dipping chocolates right on the premises. This unbroken connection to Chico's history and to traditional entrepreneurship is reflected in the family's dedication to maintaining the highest standard of quality in their products. Everything at Shubert's is still hand made with local, pure ingredients: the butter, cream, honey and nuts are delivered weekly from family-owned farms surrou nding Chico. The seasonal favorites, such as boysenberry ice cream in the spring, watermelon sherbet in the summer and pumpkin ice cream in fall, all contain locally grown produce to give it that distinctive homemade taste. And that's what Shubert's is really all about, distinctive homemade taste. Come in to the shop and sample a bit of Chico history!

When I was a young boy of 8, I enjoyed going to Shuberts for a vanilla, chocolate dipped ice cream cone. My family moved away shortly thereafter and now some 61 years later I told my wife we had to go there to see if it still was as good and if the same family owned the business. We had been friends when I was a child. There was absolutely no disappointment, my wife & I enjoyed our treats and having an opportunity to rekindle old friendships. I strongly recommend anyone to stop there and enjoy what this establishment has to offer. Service was great as well. Bob Nielsen, Roseville, CA
